First and foremost, Pakistan is taking a major step toward the rollout of 5G technology. The federal cabinet is expected to approve the long-awaited 5G spectrum auction. This approval will unlock the next phase of the country’s digital growth.

Cabinet Approval Brings Momentum

At this stage, the government has submitted final auction recommendations to the cabinet. These include the auction model and reserve prices. Once approved, the process will move forward immediately.

Meanwhile, Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima confirmed that cabinet clearance will resolve all pending issues. As a result, authorities will proceed without delays.

Six Frequency Bands to Be Auctioned

According to officials, the government plans to auction six frequency bands totaling 600 MHz of spectrum. These bands include:

  • 2600 MHz (194 MHz prime spectrum)
  • 700 MHz
  • 1800 MHz
  • 2100 MHz
  • 2300 MHz
  • 3500 MHz

Notably, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will prioritize the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz bands. Together, they offer more than 300 MHz of high-value spectrum.

Information Memorandum Coming Soon

Next, the government will release the official Information Memorandum (IM). Officials expect this within five to six days.

After that, the IM will outline bidding rules, license terms, and eligibility criteria. Telecom companies will then receive 40 to 45 days to prepare their bids.

Transparent Auction Timeline

Importantly, the government aims to complete the auction before February 15. The bidding process will remain open and transparent.

In addition, media coverage will ensure public visibility. All major local telecom operators are expected to participate. Foreign companies will also be allowed to bid.

Focus on Fair Pricing and Quality

From a technical standpoint, experts say effective 5G services require at least 100 MHz of spectrum per operator. Therefore, the government plans to keep base prices competitive.

At the same time, each frequency band will carry a separate reserve price. This strategy encourages fair competition and sustainable investment.

5G Services Expected in 2026

Looking ahead, officials expect commercial 5G services to launch in 2026. The first phase will cover Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi.

Initially, internet speeds will average 4 Mbps. Over time, later phases will push speeds up to 25 Mbps.

Simultaneously, the government plans to install new telecom towers every year. It will also fiberize existing towers. Consequently, Pakistan’s digital backbone will strengthen.

Why 5G Matters for Pakistan

Ultimately, 5G will deliver faster connectivity, support smart cities, and enable advanced digital services. In the long run, it will boost productivity, innovation, and economic growth.
