Dubai is taking another step toward smart infrastructure. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a pilot project that uses drones to clean traffic signals across the city.

Modern Technology for Smarter Maintenance

The initiative supports the RTA’s future-focused vision. It aims to improve efficiency, optimise resources, and enhance road safety.

Previously, crews relied on cranes and heavy machinery. However, these methods increased risks and slowed operations. Now, drones offer a safer alternative.

Faster Cleaning With Less Disruption

In the first phase, the RTA tested drones on traffic signals along Morocco Street and other key intersections.

During trials, authorities briefly halted traffic to ensure safety. Even so, operations finished much faster than before.

Drones can clean one section of a traffic signal in just three to four minutes. As a result, cleaning time dropped by 25 to 50 percent.

Lower Costs and Environmental Benefits

The project also reduces operational expenses. Officials estimate costs fell by around 15 percent compared to traditional methods.

In addition, drones consume less fuel and water. They also cut emissions by limiting the use of heavy equipment. This directly supports Dubai’s sustainability goals.

Officials Emphasise Innovation

Abdullah Ali Lootah, Director of Roads and Facilities Maintenance at the RTA, said the authority is committed to adopting advanced technologies.

He explained that the pilot phase compared drone-based cleaning with conventional methods. The assessment focused on time, cost, quality, and safety compliance.

What Comes Next

The first phase included trials at the intersection of Marrakech Street and Rabat Street, with limited traffic closures.

According to Lootah, early results showed time savings of up to 50 percent. Operational costs may fall further as drone technology advances.

The RTA confirmed the pilot will continue. The next phase will refine cleaning methods, improve safety, and reduce traffic disruption.

Ultimately, the initiative aims to strengthen Dubai’s road infrastructure while supporting a smarter, cleaner transport network.
