Seoul: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has confirmed that his country sent troops to Russia’s Kursk region earlier this year. Their mission involved clearing landmines, according to state media.
This rare admission highlights the dangerous roles assigned to North Korean soldiers deployed abroad.
Deadly Mission in Kursk Region
Kim said an engineering regiment served for 120 days starting in August. During this deployment, nine soldiers lost their lives.
Despite the risks, Kim praised the unit’s bravery. He said the troops turned a large danger zone into a safe area in less than three months.
State Honours for Fallen Soldiers
At a welcome ceremony in Pyongyang, Kim awarded state honours to the deceased soldiers. He said the recognition would “add eternal lustre” to their sacrifice.
Kim also acknowledged the emotional burden faced by the troops. He said they endured immense physical and mental stress almost every day.
Emotional Scenes at Welcome Ceremony
Images released by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) showed Kim embracing returning soldiers. Some appeared injured and arrived in wheelchairs.
In one image, a visibly emotional soldier sat in a wheelchair as Kim held his hand and head. Other photographs showed Kim consoling families of the fallen.
He was also seen kneeling before a portrait of a deceased soldier and placing medals and flowers in tribute.
North Korea’s Role in Ukraine War
According to South Korean and Western intelligence agencies, North Korea has sent thousands of troops to assist Russia in its war against Ukraine.
In return, analysts say Russia is providing North Korea with financial aid, food, energy supplies, and military technology. This support helps Pyongyang ease the pressure of international sanctions.
International Context
North Korea officially confirmed troop deployment only in April. It also admitted that its soldiers had been killed in combat.
Earlier, Kim appeared alongside China’s President Xi Jinping and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin at a military parade in Beijing.
Meanwhile, Kim declined a meeting offer from former US President Donald Trump during his Asia trip in October.Trump Administration Launches $1 Million “Trump Gold Card” Visa Programme
Looking Ahead
The acknowledgement marks a significant shift in North Korea’s public stance. It also underlines the growing military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow.
